Alder Vineyard

Alder Vineyard is a family-run Devon vineyard that has transformed a multi-generational family farm at the foot of Dartmoor into one of the South West's most engaging wine experiences. The Hodgetts family, who have been based at Alder Farm for generations, embarked on an ambitious challenge to grow grapevines in this dramatic landscape – proving that the edge of Dartmoor could be the perfect home for 5,000 vines.

The vineyard's story is one of diversification and passion. The farm previously housed the family's surf brand, Alder Sportswear, in the 1960s. Taking that same spirit of innovation and love of the outdoors, they planted their first vines over a decade ago. The breakthrough came in 2014 when perfect sunshine delivered an outstanding harvest, prompting them to start selling bottles made in partnership with Polgoon Vineyard in Cornwall.

In 2020, despite the challenging year, they opened their brand new winery, kitchen, and shop, taking the vineyard to the next level. Tom Hodgetts trained in winemaking to produce wines on-site, while Sarah Hodgetts leads the visitor experiences that have earned the vineyard widespread acclaim – including Gold at the 2023 Devon Tourism Awards for 'Best Café & Tearoom of the Year'.

The vineyard's ethos centres on inspiring a love of wine 'far beyond the bottle.' Visitors can enjoy tours with stunning views across the Lew Valley to the tors of Dartmoor, gaining unique insights into life in a vineyard overlooking one of England's most iconic landscapes. The team pride themselves on demystifying wine, keeping experiences personal and casual while sharing memorable moments with every guest.
