About Biddenden Vineyards Limited
Biddenden Vineyards holds a special place in English wine history as Kent's original vineyard, established in 1969 and continuously owned and managed by the Barnes family across three generations. Today, the second and third generations draw on decades of winemaking experience to produce an outstanding range of English wines, ciders, and juices.
Biddenden Vineyards: Site and Grape Varieties
The story began when the family considered diversifying from their 40-acre apple orchard as prices declined. After Joyce Barnes heard a BBC Woman's Hour feature about English vineyards being replanted, she was inspired to turn to viticulture. Starting with just one-third of an acre, Biddenden Vineyards was born.
Today, the single estate vineyard spans 23 acres of gentle south-facing slopes in a sheltered valley, just outside the picturesque Wealden village of Biddenden. Twelve different grape varieties are cultivated here to produce an impressive array of award-winning White, Rosé, Red, and Sparkling English wines.
Visiting Biddenden Vineyards
The vineyard is open to visitors throughout the year, with free admission and complimentary tastings – a generous approach that reflects the family's desire to share their passion for English wine with everyone. Guided tours take visitors through the historic vineyard, explaining the complete winemaking journey.
