About Breaky Bottom Vineyard

Breaky Bottom stands as one of the most iconic and authentic vineyards in English wine history. Established by Peter Hall, who was described by leading wine writer Andrew Jefford as 'England's emblematic (and very authentic) vigneron' and 'the father of the contemporary English wine scene,' this secluded Sussex estate represents the artisan heart of English viticulture.

Breaky Bottom Vineyard: Site and Grape Varieties

The vineyard occupies a hidden valley in the South Downs near Lewes, accessed via a narrow track that leads to a farm unlike any other in English wine. Peter Hall was a pioneering figure who, when most English vineyards were producing off-dry Germanic-style wines, insisted on making dry, French-style wines that could age and develop complexity. His vision helped reshape the entire industry.

What makes Breaky Bottom particularly significant is Peter's championship of Seyval Blanc, a hybrid variety that has struggled against the rise of Champagne varieties like Chardonnay. At Breaky Bottom, Seyval Blanc was crafted into traditional method sparkling wines of remarkable quality and longevity, proving that exceptional wine can be made from grapes perfectly adapted to English conditions.

The estate operates on a deliberately small scale, with production methods that prioritise quality over quantity. 'Made with love... not machinery' captured the philosophy that guided every vintage. This artisanal approach resulted in wines with dedicated followings among collectors and connoisseurs who appreciated their distinctive character.

Peter Hall's contributions to English wine were recognised internationally when he became the first English winemaker to be awarded the Diploma of Honour by the Fédération Internationale des Confréries Bachiques. His passing in 2025 marked the end of an era, though his legacy lives on in the vineyards he tended for decades.

Breaky Bottom represents something precious in English wine, an uncompromising commitment to authenticity, quality, and the belief that great wine comes from a profound connection between the winemaker, the land, and the vines.
