About Greyfriars Vineyard
Greyfriars Vineyard has established itself as one of the UK's top sparkling wine producers from their stunning position on the south-facing chalk slopes of the Hog's Back at Puttenham, just outside Guildford in Surrey. This 40-acre estate produces wines that reflect the unique geology, climate, and heritage of the Surrey North Downs.
Greyfriars Vineyard: Site and Grape Varieties
The vineyard was originally established in 1989 as one of the first in England to plant the traditional Champagne grape varieties - Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In 2010, Mike and Hilary Wagstaff took ownership with a vision to expand and build a state-of-the-art winery complete with an underground chalk cave cellar.
Today, the vineyards are predominantly planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, supplemented by small plots of Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Blanc. The airy tasting room, built during lockdown and opened in 2021, welcomes visitors to experience wines that have earned critical acclaim and numerous international competition prizes.
Greyfriars' ambition extends beyond creating Champagne copies. Their goal is to craft sparkling wines that express their unique Surrey terroir while embracing modern grape-growing and winemaking technology. Exciting trials and experiments in both vineyard and winery keep innovation at the forefront.
The independent, family-run ethos drives everything at Greyfriars. Visitors to Surrey's Finest Fizz discover passionate winemaking, spectacular scenery, and sparkling wines that demonstrate why the Surrey Hills have become synonymous with world-class English wine production.
