Hanwell Wine Estate

Hanwell Wine Estate represents the remarkable continuation of Nottinghamshire's pioneering wine family, now celebrating over 50 years of grape growing in the region. Led by second-generation viticulturist Helenka, the estate carries forward a family legacy that began in the late 1960s when her parents, Tony and Veronica, discovered a neglected vine and became fascinated with viticulture.

Hanwell Wine Estate: Site and Grape Varieties

The estate's roots trace back to Eglantine Vineyard, established in 1975, where the family developed innovative techniques that challenged the perception that grapes couldn't ripen this far north. Their creativity led to creating the country's first-ever Ice Wine, North Star, which has garnered international acclaim and was served at the King's Coronation banquet dinner at the Ritz Piccadilly, London.

Planted in May 2012 with 8,000 vines of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, Hanwell Wine Estate focuses on producing quality Nottinghamshire sparkling wine using the traditional champagne method. The first harvest came in October 2015, and the meticulous three-year production process now yields exceptional English sparkling wines that have earned outstanding reviews.

The family's experimental spirit continues with trials of 15 PIWI varieties, bred for disease resilience, alongside their collection of rare grape varieties. This dedication to innovation while respecting tradition defines the Hanwell approach.

Visiting and Events at Hanwell Wine Estate

Visitors can experience the vineyard through multiple offerings: drop-in wine tastings, guided vineyard tours, and the self-guided 1km vineyard trail with DIY tasting option. The Hanwell Café Bar operates during the growing season from May to September, serving light lunches, cake, coffee, and wine by the glass in the charming stables courtyard. Dogs are welcome throughout the estate, and the venue hosts special events including a 5k Wine Trail Run, twilight cocktail making sessions, and grape harvest experiences. Hanwell Wine Estate has also helped spearhead the East Midlands Wine Trail, showcasing the region's emerging wine industry.
