About Lokkelebery Vineyard
Lokkelebery Vineyard represents a new chapter in English viticulture, established in 2022 by the farming family at Lockley Farm in the Hertfordshire hills beside the historic village of Old Welwyn. As one of the closest rural vineyards to London, this young estate is bringing the English wine revolution to a region with deep agricultural roots and fascinating historical connections.
Lokkelebery Vineyard: Site and Grape Varieties
The vineyard's story began when traditional arable farmers, after decades of growing wheat, barley, and oats, decided to diversify in response to changing climate conditions and optimal topography. In spring 2022, they planted 24,746 vines comprising Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Noir Précoce across the farm's rolling terrain. The first still wines are expected from 2025, with classic English sparkling wines following from 2028.
The name 'Lokkelebery' itself connects to the rich heritage beneath the vineyard. It was one of three early names used for the manor of Lockleys in the 14th century, containing the Old English suffix 'bery' indicating a mound, highly appropriate given the hilly landscape. The Germanic linguistic roots hint at soft fruit or grape, making it a fitting reminder of the historic terroir. The site has been home to Roman villas, Iron Age settlements, and was allegedly favourite hunting grounds of King Henry VIII.
