About Saffron Grange Vineyard Ltd
Saffron Grange is one of Essex's best-kept secrets, a family-run vineyard nestled on gently sloping hills just outside the historic market town of Saffron Walden, producing delicious, premium quality English sparkling wines. The vineyard sits on the same chalk seam that runs from Northern France's renowned wine regions, up through Sussex, and into Essex, creating exceptional conditions for viticulture.
Saffron Grange Vineyard: Site and Grape Varieties
This rare geological formation, created 100 million years ago when tropical seawater deposited calcareous algae and shellfish fragments to form a deep, porous chalk bed, combines perfectly with the unique climate in this little pocket of England. In wet weather, the soil provides excellent drainage, whilst holding enough moisture during dry seasons to encourage optimal grape flavour development.
The connection to the region's agricultural heritage runs deep. Centuries ago, fields of crocuses made Saffron Walden a global centre for saffron production. Today, the same unique soil that enabled those crocuses to flourish now grows the highest quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Seyval Blanc, and Pinot Gris grapes for premium sparkling wines.
