About Wayfarer Wines
Wayfarer Wines is a family-run vineyard in the heart of Kent, founded by the Ashford family with a passionate commitment to crafting exceptional English still wines. Their journey began in 2016 when they planted almost 3,000 vines at the rear of their family home, nestled in the rolling landscape along the beautiful Pilgrims Way.
The original Maidstone vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate, positioned south and downhill of a row of houses that help dissipate frost, while the gentle gradient prevents frost pooling. This naturally protected site, combined with good airflow that keeps the vines disease-free, allows the fruit to develop its full potential.
Visiting Wayfarer Wines
Recognising the need to grow and welcome visitors, the family acquired a second vineyard site in Woodchurch, Kent, where they now operate a cellar door shop open on Saturdays. This expansion allows wine enthusiasts to wander through the vineyard and discover their wines firsthand.
Wayfarer Wines: Site and Grape Varieties
Wayfarer's philosophy places quality firmly above quantity, allowing the sugars and characteristic flavours of each grape variety to develop to their fullest potential. Their flagship wines include the Pilgrims Way Pinot Gris, noted for its conference pear nose with citrus lime and crisp green apple notes, and a delicate Pilgrims Way Pinot Noir rosé.
Matt Ashford's meticulous spray schedule and hands-on approach to vineyard management ensures fruit of the highest quality even in challenging years. The vineyard remains a true family affair, with friends and family providing labour during harvest, maintaining the intimate, artisanal character that defines Wayfarer Wines.
