About Dalwood Vineyard - Devon Vineyards Ltd
Dalwood Vineyard tells one of English wine's most endearing stories – a vineyard born from friendship, community spirit, and a shared love of wine. This small cooperative enterprise in Devon is run by four friends from the same pub skittles team, combining their passion for viticulture with the convivial atmosphere that defines the best of English village life.
Dalwood Vineyard: Site and Grape Varieties
The vineyard's origins lie in a course on vine growing at Plumpton College and an abundance of willingness to learn. Armed with this knowledge and determination, the friends planted their first vines in 2009 on a west to south-west facing slope overlooking their village. What began as an ambitious project has evolved into a genuine success story, producing award-winning wines that have earned recognition far beyond Devon.
The site encompasses just over 3,000 vines, planted with varieties chosen specifically for their ability to handle the unpredictability of West Country weather while delivering reliable crops with good blending options. Solaris, Seyval Blanc, Madeleine Angevine, and Pinot Noir thrive here, producing both still white wines and sparkling wines that capture the character of this beautiful corner of Devon.
Visiting Dalwood Vineyard
Dalwood's charm lies in its authenticity and approachability. The vineyard is open by appointment any day of the week, welcoming visitors for tours that offer genuine insight into small-scale English winemaking. Children and dogs are welcome, and the cooperative actively encourages involvement through harvest volunteering and various experiences.
Perhaps most delightfully, there's a great village pub just 500 metres from the vineyard – the perfect place to continue enjoying the fruits of Dalwood's labour after your visit. This combination of quality wine, beautiful setting, and genuine community spirit makes Dalwood Vineyard an essential destination for anyone exploring Devon's growing wine culture.
