About Fenny Castle Vineyard
Fenny Castle Vineyard is a family-run estate perched on steep slopes overlooking Glastonbury Tor, situated on the edge of the Somerset Levels in the tiny village of Worth, close to Wells - England's smallest cathedral city. Owners James and Gill Cumming transformed their dream of planting a vineyard into reality, beginning with James's enrolment at Plumpton College for a Viticulture and Winemaking degree.
The first Bacchus vines were planted in 2011, followed by the main vineyard of Ortega and Pinot Noir the following year. The site presents unique challenges and opportunities: the main vineyard rises from just 3 metres above sea level to nearly 50 metres, with the steeper upper slopes planted with Pinot Noir and the gentler lower ground hosting Ortega.
The geology adds to the vineyard's character, comprising Tea Green and red marl with a layer of Celestine between - so distinctive that part of the hill is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This unique terroir contributes to wines of exceptional character.
Fenny Castle has earned multiple awards, including a Gold Medal for their 2015 Blanc de Noir, made 100% from Pinot Noir. Ortega serves as their signature still variety, producing aromatic wines with freshness and concentration. Their Bacchus offers delicate dry notes of rose petal and elderflower, while their still Pinot Noir rosé has become very popular.
The cellar door shop is open daily, selling wines and craft ciders. Accommodation is available for those wishing to extend their visit to this extraordinary Somerset wine estate.
