About Frome Valley Vineyard
Frome Valley Vineyard sits majestically on south-facing slopes next to the River Frome in Paunton, Herefordshire, surrounded by the region's characteristic hop yards and orchards. Since taking over in 2005, Jeanie and Ian Falconer have developed this established vineyard into an award-winning estate while embracing sustainable practices at every turn.
The vineyard occupies an exceptional position at a curve of the River Frome at the head of the valley, creating a benevolent microclimate for the vines. The sumptuous clay loam terroir, deposited over millennia, provides the foundation for award-winning wines made from Seyval Blanc, Bacchus, Reichensteiner, Huxelrebe, and Madeleine Angevine grapes.
At latitude 52 degrees north, Frome Valley teeters on the edge of viable viticulture, bringing unique benefits and challenges. The Welsh/English marches provide ample water, while late frosts remain the primary concern. The vineyard was among the first small producers to join Sustainable Wines GB, ensuring their practices meet the highest environmental standards.
Sustainability permeates the entire property: solar panels power operations, biomass provides heating, and Wiltshire Horn sheep 'mow' and fertilise the vineyard naturally. A large wildlife pond, organic cider orchard, and permanent pasture sequester carbon while supporting biodiversity.
Visitors experience tours led by the owners through beautiful Herefordshire countryside. The traditional 16th and 17th century farm buildings of Paunton provide an atmospheric setting for tastings of their delicious still and sparkling wines.
