About Sandridge Barton
Sandridge Barton is the proud home of Sharpham Wine, continuing over 40 years of award-winning English winemaking in the stunning Dart Valley of South Devon. The vineyard sits in a south-facing bowl on the banks of the River Dart, where the unique climate and beauty of this special valley is captured within every bottle.
Sandridge Barton: Site and Grape Varieties
The Sandridge Barton vineyard was planted in 2008, three kilometres downriver from the original Sharpham Estate vineyard, and now comprises 32 acres producing over 80 tonnes of grapes annually. The breathtaking views across the river and beyond are matched by optimal growing conditions, as the site benefits from the warming influence of the tidal River Dart and abundant Devon sunshine.
The vineyard employs a gentle approach to grape growing, conscious of environmental impact and using no pesticides or herbicides. Underground cover crops and extensive canopy management replace chemical interventions. The diverse plantings include Madeleine Angevine, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Bacchus, Pinot Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc, thriving on varied geology including volcanic tuff (Schalstein), limestone, and slate.
Visiting and Staying at Sandridge Barton
Recent expansion includes the Stonyfield Vineyard, planted in 2021 on a raised limestone bed that was once a shallow tropical reef, and the Reservoir Field Vineyard planted in 2023. Visitors can experience this remarkable estate through tours and tastings, dine at the ROAM Restaurant, and even stay overnight to fully immerse themselves in the Dart Valley wine experience.
