About Sharpham Wine and Cheese
Sharpham Wine and Cheese occupies one of England's most beautiful vineyard sites, producing award-winning wines and artisan cheeses on a historic estate overlooking the River Dart in South Devon. Since 1981, this pioneering estate has demonstrated the quality possible from the West Country's mild climate.
The vineyard extends across 38 acres of south-facing slopes rolling down to the river, planted with varieties including Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Madeleine Angevine, Chardonnay and Bacchus. Devon's maritime influence creates a mild, relatively frost-free climate, while the limestone-rich soils contribute mineral character and good drainage. Over four decades of experience have refined understanding of which varieties thrive here.
The estate now operates as Sandridge Barton, continuing the winemaking tradition established at Sharpham. Annual harvests yield over 80 tonnes of fruit, transformed into wines that balance fruit character with precision. Particular success has been achieved with aromatic white varieties and, increasingly, with sparkling wine production.
Sustainability runs through everything at the estate. Higher Level Countryside Stewardship supports biodiversity through tree planting, wildflower margins and rewilding. In the vineyard, regenerative practices avoid pesticides and herbicides while building soil health. The winery and cellar door run on solar power, with water from the estate's spring and rainwater harvesting.
Visitors enjoy tours, tastings and the café with its stunning river views. The estate also offers unique holiday accommodation. For over 40 years, this has been a destination that celebrates Devon's potential for quality wine production in one of England's most beautiful settings.
