About Toppesfield Vineyard

Toppesfield Vineyard is a small boutique vineyard run by Jane and Peter Moore in the rolling hills of Essex. The story began in winter 2011 when they had the opportunity to buy agricultural land next to their house. Research revealed that the valley around Toppesfield was heavily planted with vines in Roman times, a theory supported by the 1800s discovery of a Roman centurion's remains, his sword blade, metal wine vase, and small cups in the field where the current vineyard stands.

Toppesfield Vineyard: Site and Grape Varieties

This rich history inspired the creation of a 21st century vineyard on historic ground. After marking out the site in winter 2012 with guidance from McNeill Vineyard Management, vines were planted on fertile chalk subsoil overlain by clay loam. The easterly and westerly winds provide good air circulation, while East Anglia's high levels of sunshine create an ideal growing environment.

Bacchus was chosen as the main white grape variety, a cool climate grape that thrives in East Anglia's dry, sunny conditions. Often referred to as England's answer to Sauvignon Blanc, Toppesfield's Bacchus is crisp, dry, and fruity with flavours of gooseberry, elderflower, and nettle, evoking sensations of English hedgerows in early summer. Pinot Noir Précoce, an early-ripening red grape, produces excellent rosé wine.

The Moores combine busy working lives with weekends in the vineyard, where their passion for English wine meets their love of being outdoors. Visitors can experience this boutique operation by appointment, sampling wines sold through the East of England Co-op and local outlets.
