About Yotes Court
Yotes Court is a rare and wonderful thing – a bold, modern venture led by progressive and sustainable values, but with roots deep in time, tradition, and place. This 75-acre vineyard on the outskirts of Mereworth village, between Maidstone and Tonbridge, was hailed by Master of Wine Stephen Skelton as the best site he has planted in 45 years.
Yotes Court: Origins and Development
The vineyard is located west of Yotes Court, a historic English Heritage Grade I listed manor house between the picturesque villages of West Peckham and Mereworth. Originally a soft and top fruit farm, the land was meticulously planted in 2016 following Skelton's identification of its exceptional potential.
Yotes Court: Site and Grape Varieties
The beautiful south-sloping site looks towards Bidborough Ridge and Tunbridge Wells, with free-draining soil full of chunks of Kentish ragstone – when it comes to growing perfect grapes, the rockier the better. The continuous weathering of this parent material creates fertile fine clays and free-draining sands, while the south-facing aspect heats the rocky soils to enhance vine and grape maturity.
Vineyard Manager Tony Purdie, who relocated from New Zealand in 2016, uses science and technology to minimise sprays and fuel, increase biodiversity, and protect soil fertility for generations. In August 2020, Yotes Court was among the first to achieve accreditation under the Sustainable Wines of Great Britain scheme.
Yotes Court concentrates on single vintage, 100% single varietal wines to reflect the distinctive geography and unique characteristics of each grape variety. Bacchus, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and the disease-resistant Divico variety all thrive here. From harvest experiences to exclusive tastings, there's always something new to discover at this exceptional estate.
